Biography

Aristotle Sokratis Onassis (Greek: Αριστοτέλης Ωνάσης) was a famous Greek shipping magnate and entrepreneur. He also founded the Greek airline Olympic Airways in 1957. Onassis emigrated with his family from Smyrna in the Ottoman Empire (now Izmir) to Argentina after the war.

In Argentina, he built up gradually as shipping owner, not least in the whaling, where he had close contact with Norwegian shipowners, including Anders Jahre and Erling Dekke Nęss.
After the Second World War used Onassis opportunities that arose with the need for new tonnage and further expanded. In 1954 he was investigated for tax fraud by the FBI and agreed to a settlement in which he paid 7 million U.S. dollars.

After the Second World War Onassis bought a disused Canadian frigate, polished it up and used it as his private fancy yacht. The yacht "Christina O" named after the daughter of Christina Onassis, was a focal point for world socialites in the 1950s, and famous personalities like Winston Churchill, John F. Kennedy and Marilyn Monroe were guests aboard.

Onassis lived for many years with opera singer Maria Callas. He got married with Jacqueline Kennedy on 20th October 1968, widow of the murdered President John F. Kennedy, they where married until his death.

Onassis died after years of illness of pneumonia in 1975 in Neuilly-sur-Seine near Paris, France.
