Biography
Cat Stevens (also called Yusuf Islam) was born "Steven Georgiou" in London, Demetra in the UK by Swedish mother and Greek father. From 1966 to 1978 he released the popular music under the name Cat Stevens. He wrote most of the material itself.
23. December 1977 he converted to Islam and took the name Yusuf Islam. He then pulled back from the public and started a family. In 1989 he created strong media campaigns because of careless comments about Salman Rushdie affair.
In 2004, Islam denied access to the U.S., apparently because a name that looked like his was on a list of undesirable persons.
In 2005 he collaborated with the Swedish director Anders Albi on a musical with the working name of Moonshadow, built around Cat Stevens songs. Scheduled release is 2006/07. Zodiac etc.
