Biography

David Satcher is a former admiral of the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, serving from 1998 to 2001 as 10th Assistant Secretary for Health, and at the same time as the 1998-2002 16th Surgeon General of the United States. He was the first African American to the post of Surgeon General.

Satcher graduated from Morehouse College in 1963 at Atlanta. He then studied medicine at Case Western Reserve University. From 1979 to 1982 Satcher served as professor at the Morehouse School of Medicine. From 1982 to 1993 he was president of Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee.

From February 1998 to January 2001, Satcher, Surgeon General of the United States. He was followed in this office Joycelyn Elders, Audrey F. Manley had provisionally exercised the office. Satcher is a member of the Democratic Party. 2001 was passed under his responsibility as Surgeon General of the United States, the report The Call to Action to Promote Sexual Health and Responsible Sexual Behavior.

Satcher is married to Nola Satcher and they have four children together.
