Biography

Emma Thompson is an English actress and screenwriter who studied English Literature at Newnham College, Cambridge where she was a member of Cambridge Footlights. After Cambridge, she was known by her leading role in the BBC drama series Fortunes of War, which was based on Olivia Manning's novels. She played against Kenneth Branagh, whom she later married. They were married on 20 August 20 1989. They have played together in the hit films such as Dead Again, Henry V and Much Ado About Nothing, but divorced in October 1995. Thompson married in 2003 with actor Greg Wise, whom she in 1999, daughter Gaia Romilly with.

Thompson also had leading roles in romantic comedies such as The Tall Guy, and more serious films such as Howards End. The film is based on EM Forster's novel, and she won the Oscar for Best Actress for her interpretation. She has played in The Remains of the Day with Anthony Hopkins and The Winter Guest by director Alan Rickman).

Her career was topped by the 1996 Oscar for the film adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility, where she starred as "Elinor Dashwood".

Thompson played "Rachel Rummelfiold" in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), where she followed in the footsteps of her ex-husband Branagh, who played "Gyldeprinz Lockhart" in the previous "Harry Potter" movie.

She also played "Cecilia" in Imagining Argentina (2003), with co-star Antonio Banderas.

In October 2005, after working on the project for over nine years, was her film Nanny McPhee launched. Thompson wrote the screenplay and played the lead role. Her mother also had a role in the film.
