Annis played 1963 Cleopatra's handmaiden in the movie Cleopatra. She played the female lead in British films such as The Eyes of Annie Jones in 1964, Run with the Wind 1966.

In 1971 she played Lady Macbeth in Roman Polanski directed the movie, The Tragedy of Macbeth. After that, she was on the cast in several British TV films and TV series such as the English King Edward VII's mistress Lillie Langtry in Edward the Seventh, or Lillie 1975.

In 1984, Francesca Annis played the female lead as "Lady Jessica" in science fiction and fantasy film Dune, written and directed by David Lynch.

Fransesca Annis also made many important supporting roles in British and American TV series and TV movies, including I'll Take Manhattan, The Saint and the Magnum, which she plays the noble Penelope St. Clair. The years 1983 and 1984 solved her murder mysteries starring as Tuppence Beresford in ten independent television episodes based on Agatha Christie's writings. The year before, 1982, she had had the lead role as Tuppence Cowley in the for-TV filmed Christie murder mystery The Secret Adversary. She is also known from the TV series [Between the Lines, Cranford, and Deceit.
