Biography

Garry Winogrand was an American street photographer known for his portrait of the United States in the mid-twentieth century. John Szarkowski called him the central photographer of his generation.

Born in 1928, pupil of Alexis Brodovitch, Garry Winogrand is the spiritual son of Walker Evans. In 1955, upon becoming aware of the work done by Evans on passersby in the New York subway, Winogrand begins his "photographic study of American life." His subject: the street. Pedestrian, from himself, he goes, for nearly 30 years, tirelessly recording, so spontaneous, as the complexity of banality or the quirks of urban life. Winogrand Street develops as an enigma, a theater where everything is possible and subject to image. He photographed men, women, groups, crowds ... so many unknowns, many anonymous. As its gallerist Jeffrey Fraenkel, "the street, it was his central metaphor. There he discovered the theatrical moments, random fascinated him the most and he realized the images that remain at the heart of his vision".

However, if in the wake of Walker Evans, his intention is not the same. Soon, he identified the boundaries of photojournalism and he does not seek to denounce any alienation of the individual. No, what interests Winogrand, it is the image, only the picture. Its purpose is "the emergence of photographic aesthetics" (Gilles Mora), is knowing "what things look like when they were photographed" (G. Winogrand). This formula, enigmatic itself, summarizes the intention of Winogrand: not knowing the people, return to their privacy, trying to compose something that makes sense, but rather stay abroad, one who goes and who sees, then that gives view. Thus, Winogrand is interested there more women to photograph only the status of women.

From Manhattan to Paris, via Dallas, Los Angeles, London and other cities, in a movement which combines photographic unexpectedly, fluidity, appetite, energy and above all a wonderful instinct, Garry Winogrand has completed over 100 000 images, always new, reflecting a vision still a virgin. The lack of artifice, the neutrality of the emotion, the rejection of formalism, any aesthetic a priori allow the viewer to remain free in his imagination, in convergences, divergences, the composition he can do to each image.

Died prematurely in 1984, Garry Winogrand is still poorly understood, as he left work to do in the archiving, processing and printing of his photographs. However, it is undoubtedly one of the masters of American street photography, just as Evans, Frank, Friedlander and Klein.

The beautiful hook in the Espace Van Gogh in Arles, Winogrand encourages each traveler's exposure to meditate for a few good moments on each image, then, simply, to go his way.
