Biography

Jacqueline Cochran was an eminent American pilot. As the first woman she broke through the sound barrier in 1953 in a specially equipped jet. She was the first woman who started and landed from an aircraft carrier, the first woman who flew a jet across the Atlantic, the first pilot who made a blind landing and the first pilot who flew more than 6000 meters with an oxygen mask.

During the Second World War, Cochran Head of the Women's Airforce Service Pilots, a group of female pilots who flew military aircraft from factories in the United States to England. After a stint in politics, she was test pilot for Northrop Corporation, the leading aircraft factory, she set eight new records in their T-38 Talon and tried the fast advanced supersonic planes Lockheed F-104 Starfighter.

She received a large number of awards. When she died, she had several altitude records, speed records and length records than any other pilot in the aircraft's history.
