Biography

James Lawrence LevineJames Levine is an American conductor and pianist.

Even as a ten year old Levine appeared as a soloist in Felix Mendelssohn's Piano Concerto No. 2. 1961-1964 he studied at the Juilliard School of Music in New York City and conducting with Jean Morel. The first few years after graduation, he worked as an assistant to the American conductor George Szell at the Cleveland Orchestra. Subsequently he has worked at the Philadelphia Orchestra, Welsh National Opera and the San Francisco Opera.

He made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in June 1971 in Tosca, was appointed in 1973 as chief conductor and music director in 1975 and artistic director 1986th Levin's work has meant a lot to strengthen and consolidate the Metropolitan Opera's role as one of the leading opera houses in the world. From 2004 parts Levine time between Metropolitan and being a manager for the Boston Symphony Orchestra (after Seiji Ozawa).

At the Metropolitan, he has set up includes works by Alban Berg, Debussy, Gershwin, Mozart, Rossini, Schoenberg, Strauss, Stravinsky, Verdi, Wagner, Kurt Weill and also more recent works such as John Coriglianos The Ghosts of Versailles.

Levine is also regular guest conductor of the other leading orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, Munich Philharmonic, the Philharmonia Orchestra in London and Saxon Staatskapelle Dresden, and at several festivals, including Bayreuth Festival, where he has conducted 15 seasons.

James Levine has also become known for playing chamber music and as a valued accompanist for Lieder singer.
