Biography

Eric Reed Boucher, better known as Jello Biafra, is an American musician and political activist. He was the lead singer of Dead Kennedys from the band was started in 1978 until it disbanded in 1986. When the band started playing under the name Dead Kenedy in 2001, Biafra took away from this. Biafra considers himself an anarchist, but still puts great emphasis on the need for organization, and is a member of the Green Party. Elections in 2004, he was among Green Party members who supported Ralph Nader's candidacy instead of party line to support John Kerry in states where George W. Bush could win.

Biafra became politically active, and this went hand in hand with interest in punk. After an interrupted program at the University of California, he moved to San Francisco and joined the Dead Kennedys. In 1979 the band released their debut album Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables. The same year he asked for election as mayor of San Francisco on a program for car-free city, right to the occupation of empty houses and a law that would force all business men to be dressed in clown costume. He got 3.5% and came in 4th space of 10 candidates. A direct consequence of Biafra's candidacy was a law forbidding people to set up under false names.

In 1986, both Dead Kennedys disbanded and Biafra separated from his wife Therese Soder, whom he had married in 1981. The reason for the dissolution of the band was that it was pulled to court by, among others, later vice-president's wife Tipper Gore for having been an offensive poster by albumen Frank Christ. Biafra said, however, saying that it was because the band had a political message, and in the wake of the trial, he released the album High verbal Priest of Harmful Matter in which he takes up. Plata also helped cover the costs.

In 1988, Biafra formed the band Lard, a band that, with more delay, has kept it going until today. He also released records with DOA, No Means No, 1000 Homo Djs and Steel Pole Bathtub in the early 1990s. Since then he has released two albums with bluegrass pianist Mojo Nixon, plates that have been critics to say he has abandoned punk, two plates and a Melvins album recorded during the demonstrations against the WTO in Seattle in 1999 with former members of Nirvana and Soundgarden. In addition, seven verbal plates.

In 1998, clothing manufacturer Levi with a request to use Dead Kennedys song Holiday in Cambodia in an advertisement. While other former members said yes, Biafra said no because of the company's working conditions of workers in the developing world are working under. This resulted in a trial where Biafra and Alternative Tentacles his company was deprived of rights to the Dead Kennedys' releases. Biafra was also ordered to pay $ 200,000 to his former friends.

Biafra has also in recent years distinguished itself heavily political. Unlike many other anarchists he was reluctant not to use all channels. He has lined up with Oprah Winfrey twice.
