Biography

Jesse Louis Jackson, Sr. is an American human rights activist, politician and Baptist minister.

After university and theological studies, he began to work for Martin Luther King and was one of his closest men. Together with him, he organized the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and was towards the end of the 1960s, head of Operation Breadbasket. In 1971 he founded People United to Serve Humanity (PUSH), an organization for self-help for the black population, and 1984 Rainbow Coalition.

In the 1980s he became a well known politician and advocate of civil rights issues and for the African American population. He ran in 1984 and 1988 campaigns for the Presidency of the Democratic party.

He then supported including Bill Clinton and, at times, been one of his advisers. He has also acted internationally and on several occasions contributed to American prisoners and hostages released. He has since stepped forward as a critic of U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East and Latin America, in connection with the war in Iraq.
