John Bowden Connally was an American lawyer and politician who is known for its offices such as governor of Texas during the period between 1963 and 1969 as well as U.S. 61 . Finance Minister in the period 1971 to 1972 under President Richard Nixon.

Connally was educated as a lawyer at the University of Texas School of Law and entered the United States Navy during World War II where he was awarded both the Bronze Star Medal and the Legion of Merit for his efforts. Immediately after the war began Connally to practice his profession a lawyer before he entered politics and the staff of Congressman Lyndon B. Johnson. He belonged to the Democratic party, but joined the Republican Party after Johnson died in 1973. When Vice President Spiro Agnew resigned in 1973, it was speculated that Connally would succeed him, but President Richard Nixon chose Gerald Ford instead of him.

In his time as finance minister was Connally among other things, to increase the price of gold and devalue the dollar so that the United States went off the gold standard. John Connally died 15 June 1993 in Houston of a progressive lung disease.
