In 2001, Bell left the New York University to take a leading role in a musical called The Adventures of Tom Sawyer on Broadway. The same year she made her first credited film role in Pootie Tang. She also auditioned for the role of "Chloe Sullivan" in the television series Smallville, a role that Allison Mack finally got.

In 2002 she was into Broadway production, this time The Crucible with famous actors like Liam Neeson, Angela Bettis and Laura Linney. Bell then moved to Los Angeles and appeared in a handful of television series in guest roles, but had trouble finding a permanent role. Bell had "tried eight times and have not got anything, and every series she tried on became popular” including samples of the series Skin. In 2003 she got a role in the television film The King and Queen of Moonlight Bay.

In 2004, Bell where in the theater staging of Reefer Madness in Los Angeles, having moved there in 2002 because of her friendship with writers Kevin Murphy and Dan Studney. Later she was in a TV movie called Gracie's Choice, which received very high ratings. She followed that with a role in Spartan as Laura Newton, the kidnapped daughter of an American condescension. One of the other players was Val Kilmer. Bell also had a guest role in TV series Deadwood.

Soon after, she starred in the drama series Veronica Mars, which was launched in autumn 2004. Bell played the role of a 17-year-old detective (Veronica Mars). Some of her teammates were Enrico Cola Toni (her father in the series), Jason Dohring, Percy Dagger III and Ryan Hansen. Veronica Mars was described as part of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and a little bit Bogart. "The series received a positive reception, as did Bell's plays, as some critics thought she should be rewarded with an Emmy Award nomination” In 2006, Bell won the Saturn Award for Best Actress Wed Television for her role in Veronica Mars, while the series was nominated for "Best Network Television Show". Bell then played in several films that were not very famous.

Veronica Mars continued until the third season, when it was announced that it would take a break from February 2007. Shortly after the cancellation, Bell filmed in Hawaii for the lead role in the comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall. The film premiered in May 2008.

Following the end of Veronica Mars, Bell expressed interest to participate in the television series Heroes. In July 2007, during a train ride along with Heroes actors Zachary Quinto and Masi Oka and some of the writers from the series, one of them said that if she "ever wanted to play in Heroes, so call us" upon which Bell replied that she would love to.

She was also approached for a role on Lost, but was not offered despite speculation that she would play the role of "Charlotte".

In August 2007 it was announced that Bell would play the role of "Elle Bishop", a mysterious young lady with an awesome power. She did not have to audition for the role that will be included in the Heroes for 13 episodes.
