Biography

Mark Lavon "Levon" Helm was an American rock musician best known as the drums, lead singer and mandolinist in the rock group The Band. Helm is known for its heartfelt, country-like voice and the powerful way he play the drums on. These two elements influenced The Band's recordings, and this is particularly forward on his contributions to songs like "The Weight," "Up on Cripple Creek," "King Harvest," "Ophelia" and not least on "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down ".

While the rest of The Band was Canadians, Helm added soutstate background to the group, both interpretations and an understanding of how the message can be expressed for a U.S. southstate audience, which are especially evident on the song "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down."

Helm had roles in the movies Coal Miner's Daughter, The Right Stuff and The Three Burial of Melquiades Estrada.

Helm also played in the blues group The Levon Helm Band, starring his daughter Amy.

He published his autobiography This Wheel's on Fire – Levon Helm and the Story of The Band, where he was highly critical of the band member Robbie Robertson's role during the split of The Band.

Helm died 19 april of cancer at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City.
