Biography

Lynn Davies is a former Welsh athlete. He was one of the world's best long jumpers in the 1960s.

After the American Ralph Boston had beaten the 25-year-old world record set by Jesse Owens in 1960, improved Boston and European champion Igor Ter-Ovanesian world record five more times. Thus, these two performers the biggest favorites to take the gold medal at the Olympics 1964 in Tokyo.

On the final day it rained in Tokyo, and none of the favorites jumped to their personal records. Thus, the gold to 22-year-old Lynn Davies, who set a new British record with gold jumped 8.07 m Boston took the silver and Ter-Ovanesian bronze. This was also the second time in Olympic history that the gold medal in long jump did not go to a practitioner from the United States. Last time this happened was during the Olympics 1920, when the Swede William Pettersson took the gold.

In the years that followed proved that Davies victory was no fluke. He took gold in Euro 1966 in Budapest, and took silver in Euro 1969 in Athens. He also won the Commonwealth Games twice, in 1966 and 1970.

He set a total of six British records, the longest jump measured 8.23m in Bern (1968).
