He was originally a Catholic priest in augustinereremittenes order. He received a thorough education of their order, and was a professor at the University of Wittenberg. In early 30s he developed theological views both about the church's authority, the sacraments, and man and its relationship to God - with his alienation from the church of fraud, for example in the way indulgences were practiced on - gave impetus to the Reformation and led to the founding of the Evangelical-Lutheran churches. The starting point of the Reformation, traditionally given as 31 October 1517, the day he posted his talk theses against indulgences aspects of the practice, which he, according to a widespread but dubious and ill-plated historical legend nailed to the church door in Wittenberg. But in itself did not represent this event a momentous failure. However, it was the way the conflict between Luther and his opponents evolved in both its ever escalating form and in its gravity towards more central theological concerns than just the aspect of ecclesiastical botspraksis, which brought forth an irrevocable break in a few years.

In 1521 Luther was outlawed, and he took refuge in a benevolent and powerful prince. His movement had some setbacks in conjunction with the German peasant war and when it failed to hold the church together critical fractions because of divergent theological positions. Luther's translation of the Bible had a profound impact on the development of the German language. His hymn writing inspired a flowering of the Christian congregation also sang in other faiths. His marriage with a nun Katharina von Bora priest gave legitimacy marriage within several Christian traditions. Luther's Reformation broke the ecclesiastical unit of continental western Europe and northern Europe, and also had large and lasting political and kulturforandrende consequences.
