Biography

Mary Todd Lincoln was married to Abraham Lincoln, and was America's first lady from 1861 to Lincoln's assassination in 1865. She was the daughter of a banker, Robert Smith Todd, and Elizabeth Parker-Todd. His mother died when she was seven years old, and she had a difficult relationship with his stepmother, Elizabeth "Betsy" Humphreys-Todd, his father married in 1826. Including his half-siblings, had Mary Todd Lincoln fifteen siblings.

Mary Todd went at good recommended schools, spoke French fluently, and studied dance, drama and music. She always had a joke up his sleeve, and a lively personality made her quite popular. She had an explosive temper, and was argumentative by nature and was mentally unstable at times. She was particularly bothered by migraine attacks. Some historians and psychologists have suggested that she may have suffered from schizophrenia, but such a diagnosis didnít exist, and a diagnosis was long after her death can not be sure.

She was married in 1842 Abraham Lincoln, who at that time was a lawyer in Springfield, Illinois. Mary and Abraham had sons, but only Robert Todd Lincoln reached adulthood. She ended up with a somewhat strained relationship with Robert, when he got her into psychiatric hospital and rest home for a while, after she had suffered from mental instability over time.
