Biography

He was a Danish physicist who contributed crucial to the understanding of atomic structure and the development of quantum mechanics. Niels Bohr won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1922.

Bohr was born on 7 October 1885 in Copenhagen. His parents were Christian Bohr and Ellen Adler. He died the same place on 18 november 1962.

In his youth he played football for the Danish national team and was an avid sailor. His brother, Harald Bohr was a mathematician and footballer, he won silver for Denmark during the Summer Olympics 1908.

Bohr was educated at the University of Copenhagen in 1911, after which he went to Manchester in England and studied with Ernest Rutherford. In 1913 he published a description of the atom's structure. This description was later known as the Bohr model.

Bohr was in 1916 appointed professor at Copenhagen University and chair of the newly established Institute for Theoretical physicist. He ate dinner with the royal family of Norway on the 8th april 1940, just before the invasion of Norway and Denmark. He loved to ski in the mountains, especially in Norway. He and Werner Heisenberg worked with the Copenhagen interpretation. It describes why some cells can be in two places at the same time.
