Biography

Paul-Marie Verlaine was a French poet associated with the Symbolist movement. He is considered one of the greatest representatives of the fin de siècle in international and French poetry.

He was the son of an engineer captain. Verlaine studied at the École polytechnique, but indulged in later literature. His starting point and original literary school was read Parnassia (Parnassus). Debut collection of poetry, Poems Saturnia (1865), was written under the influence of them, gallant fetes (1869), and the more La bonne chanson (1870) shows that he begins to dissociate from them.
