Rio Gavin Ferdinand is an English footballer, captain of the English national team. He plays everyday as central defender in the Premier League club Manchester United.

Ferdinand began his football career in various youth teams. He came at last to West Ham United where he came through the youth levels to 1996, as an eighteen year old, making his professional debut in the Premier League. He quickly became a favorite with the fans. He played his first international for England in 1997 against Cameroon. Ferdinand became the youngest defender ever to play for England on the international stage. His accomplishments and great potential attracted the interest of Leeds United and he moved to the club for a record sum of 18 million pounds. He stayed for two seasons at the club and became captain in 2001.

In July 2002, Ferdinand was bought by Manchester United for around £ 30 million, or almost 400 million. He became the most expensive defender ever. Ferdinand was having won the Premier League, his first great merit, in his first successful full season with the club. More successes achieved in 2006/2007 season when the club won both the league and UEFA Champions League. In March 2008 Ferdinand for the first time captain of the English national team. Under Fabio Capello's leadership, he was first vice-captain, but after John Terry lost his role as team captain was named Ferdinand in February 2010 as captain.

Ferdinand has two sons, Lorenz and Tate, with his fiancée Rebecca Ellison. Ferdinand comes from a football family: his brother, Anton Ferdinand, playing as central defender in the Queens Park Rangers FC and his cousin Les Ferdinand is a former English internationals.
