BiographySerhiy Nazarovych Bubka is a Ukrainian former athlete. He was the first in the world who jumped over 6 meters in the pole vault. He set the current world record of 6.14 m 31 July 1994 in Sestriere, Italy.
In 1978 Serhij moved to the Ukrainian city of Donetsk with his coach. He made his international debut in 1983 when he won the event in the World Championships in Helsinki with 5.70 m over the years that followed Bubka set new standards in the pole vault. 13. July 1985 he jumped six feet in Paris.
In the period between 1984 and 1994 improved Bubka pole vault world record by 21 centimeters, usually with 1 cm at a time. In all, he set 17 world records outdoors.
Six times world champion was Bubka pole vault. He won the first six world championships held in athletics, in the years 1983, 1987, 1991, 1993, 1995 and 1997. In addition, he was Olympic champion in 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, and European Champion in 1986 in Stuttgart.
Since 2002 he has been a representative in the Ukrainian parliament.
