Thaddeus Stevens (born in Danville, Vermont, U.S., died in Washington, D.C., U.S.) was a famous Politician from USA, who lived between April 4, 1792 and August 11, 1868.


Thaddeus Stevens is an American politician. Elect of Pennsylvania, he was one of the most influential members of the House of Representatives and a leader of the radical wing in the Republican party, with Charles Sumner, when the Civil War and early Reconstruction. He is considered a champion of equality between rich and poor, blacks and whites (also men and women for some), a surly politician seeking to take revenge on his plebeian origin for others. He's one of the most controversial figures in american history.

His father disappears right after the birth, leaving his wife and four young children in poverty. He studied law and became a lawyer in Pennsylvania. He belongs successively to several parties (such as anti-Masonic Party) before joining the Republican Party, and devoted himself with energy to combat the power of slavery. In 1848, while being a member of the Whig party, he was elected to the House of Representatives. It is distinguished for he's commitment to the defense of minorities and oppressed Indians, Adventists, Mormons, Jews, Chinese, women, runaway slaves. He helps them to escape to Canada. During the Civil War he became one of the most influential elected to the House of Representatives. By December 1861, he wants to use the freeing of slaves as a weapon to weaken the South. He called for total war in January 1862. He rages against the profits made by the bankers during the war.

After Confederate defeat, he was the leader of radical Republicans who control Congress after the elections of 1866. During the deliberations of Congress in 5 December 1866 on the Fourteenth Amendment he suggested the following wording "All laws enacted at the national and state level will also apply to every citizen, and no discrimination will be established between those citizens on the basis of race or skin color". He requested that the military engages in the south to force its people to recognize the equality of former slaves. When Johnson resisted, it was he who proposed the vote empeachment and is the start of the procedure in 1868. He died shortly after the procedure fails.
