Walter Chrysler (born as Walter Percy Chrysler in Wamego, Kansas) was a famous Inventor from USA, who lived between April 2, 1875 and August 18, 1940.


Walter Percy Chrysler was an American manufacturer, born in Wamego, Kansas. His father, a driver for what is now Union Pacific Railroad, was Canadian, his mother was American. Chrysler founded the Chrysler Corporation in 1925.

As a boy he was fascinated by machines, and after completing high school in 1892, he was determined to become a machinist. His first job was with the local railway workshop, where he advanced to the position of Master Mechanic with another railway. In 1901 he married his childhood sweetheart, Della Forker. They had four children.

Chrysler was not interested in cars before he visited the Chicago Auto Show in 1908. He bought an expensive lokomobil just to take it apart and study its construction.

His first job in the automotive industry was as supervisor of the Buick Motor Company in 1911. Within five years he was promoted to president and general manager of Buick, with an annual salary of U.S. $ 500,000. Buick was part of General Motors Corporation and Chrysler in 1919 was promoted to be the first vice-president responsible for production at the giant company. But later the same year retired from the business world after being a millionaire at the age of 45.

Chrysler did not like being retired, and was soon underway again as executive vice president and general manager of the economically threatened Willys Overland Company in 1920. At the same time, he worked privately with engineers on a car of his own design, which was shown to the public in 1924.

With a check from Chase Securities at 5 million dollars to Maxwell Motor Corp.. where Walter Chrysler at the time was chairman, was Chrysler put his car into production as the Chrysler Six.

A year later, on 6 June 1925 Chrysler bought Maxwell Motor Corp.. and formed his new company, Chrysler Corporation.

In the following year bought the Chrysler Corporation, under Walter Chrysler's management, Dodge, Plymouth and Desoto brands.

In 1935 Chrysler came back as president of the company which he founded, and in 1938 he had forced by illness to stop as an active board member. He died on 8 august 1940 in Detroit, Michigan.
