Introduction
"Anna Christie" is a 1930 American pre-Code drama movie adapted from Eugene O'Neill's 1921 play of the very same name. Directed by Clarence Brown and produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, it stars Greta Garbo in her debut talkie film role as the title character, along with supporting stars Charles Bickford, George F. Marion, and Marie Dressler. The story focuses on Anna, a girl with a dark past who reunites with her long-absent dad and begins a complex romantic relationship.

Plot
The film begins with Anna Christie (Greta Garbo) recovering from a hazardous way of life in Minnesota, following her mother's death. She gets a letter from her dad, Chris Christopherson (George F. Marion), a taciturn seafaring male living in New York. Feeling the urge to reunite, Anna transfers to New York to deal with him in a run-down barge. During this reunion, Anna keeps her turbulent past a trick from her daddy, who believes she's working as a nurse.

As the film progresses, Anna's father, Chris, saves Matt Burke (Charles Bickford), a sailor, during a storm. As Anna and Matt look after the stranded sailor, an unforeseen romantic relationship blossoms in between the two, putting Anna in a complicated problem. She now finds herself tortured by her secret past and the fear of it disrupting her newfound happiness.

Character Development & Conflict
Garbo depicts a troubled character who invites newly found liberty from her shrouded past but battles with fear and insecurity that her tricks may jeopardize her possibility at happiness. Her performance was favored, capturing the inner turmoil of Anna as she handles love and hid facts.

In contrast, Matt, unaware of Anna's troubled past, deeply falls for her and imagine a life together. When Anna's dark past is finally exposed, it produces a strong internal dispute for Matt between his love for Anna and his moral beliefs. On the other hand, Chris, fighting his own alcohol addiction and solitude, is oblivious to his child's battles. This complex interplay of characters creates a greatly dramatic narrative.

Ending & Themes
Regardless of the high stress and expressions of remorse and anger, the movie ends on a confident note. Matt selects love over judgement and couple with Anna, thus showing the frustrating power of love and acceptance.

"Anna Christie" explores numerous styles such as forgiveness, redemption, acceptance, and the power of love. The film further looks into humanity's battle in challenging previous misdeeds and the fear of judgement.

Reception & Legacy
"Anna Christie" made a considerable impact, mostly for marking Garbo's successful transition from quiet movies to talkies. The movie's marketing tagline, "Garbo talks!" achieved renowned status. The movie got three elections at the 3rd Academy Awards, including Best Actress for Garbo. The movie left an enduring legacy in cinematography, showing the successful transition of Hollywood stars from the silent age to the age of sound movies.
