Plot Summary

Lena subsequently volunteers to carry out a mission into 'the Shimmer,' a weird quarantined zone of altering plants and animals caused by an alien phenomenon.

Lena joins a group making up psychologist Dr. Ventress (Jennifer Jason Leigh), paramedic Anya (Gina Rodriguez), physicist Josie (Tessa Thompson), and anthropologist Cass (Tuva Novotny). The Shimmer is expanding and taking in whatever in its path, and their objective is to reach the source of the phenomenon and avoid it from encompassing the entire planet.

As the group advances towards the Shimmer, they come across mysterious phenomena and altered animals that position threat to their lives. They discover the alien nature of the Shimmer - it refracts all genetic and radioactive product, triggering controls within the types present inside it.

Climax
Lena and Ventress are the only two who make it through the dangerous journey towards the lighthouse, the source of the Shimmer. Ventress reaches the lighthouse first and transforms into an alien entity. Lena encounters a humanoid creature in the lighthouse, and after a tense interaction, manages to escape by making the creature imitate her hand movements to hold a phosphorous grenade, thereby damaging the Shimmer and the lighthouse with it.

Ending
The film ends with Lena discussing the incident to a government operative. In a surprising twist, it is exposed that the Kane who returned house was, in truth, a Shimmer-created clone. As Lena and Kane reunite, their eyes flicker, showing they both have actually been changed or affected by the Shimmer.
