Overview
"Bad City Blues" is an action-packed police procedural launched in 1999, directed by Michael Stevens. The movie script by Tim Willocks is an adaptation of his novel of the very same name. The film features an impressive cast that consists of Michael McGrady, Judith Hoag, Michael Massee, and Jim Metzler.

Plot Summary
The plot is an intricate tapestry of desperation and violence, highlighting the grimy underbelly of New Orleans. The movie begins with a high-stakes break-in dedicated by Callilou Carter (Michael Massee) and his crew. From the start, the audience understands that Callilou is not a standard criminal but a highly disrupted veteran with a taste for cruelty. After effectively robbing a drug delivery worth $5 million, Callilou ruthlessly murders his accomplices, planning to keep the entire stash for himself.

Main Characters
The movie's lead character is Dr. Luther Waxling (Michael McGrady), a psychiatrist with a lavish lifestyle moneyed by his rich clients' kindness. However, Luther conceals a dark secret: he secretly tape-records his customers' treatment sessions, offering the juiciest tricks to the greatest bidder. His next patient is his old good friend, Callilou. Unidentified to Luther, Callilou plans to use him as an intermediary for the cash, hoping he can clean it without drawing attention.

Simultaneously, we fulfill Detective Cleveland Carter (Jim Metzler), a seasoned police assigned to investigate the heist. His inquiries lead him to Luther's door, adding another layer of complexity to the plot.

Tension and Conflict
Stress ratchet up when Callilou kidnaps Cynthia Cervantes (Judith Hoag), requiring her to hide the cash. This action moves Luther and Cynthia into a nightmarish ordeal as they frantically attempt to leave from Callilou's clutches. Luther, being more of an afraid schemer than a standard hero, struggles to withstand Callilou and safeguard Cynthia. They form a not likely bond, including a more human element to the gritty story.

Climax and Resolution
The climax gets here with a lethal showdown involving Callilou, Luther, Cynthia, and Detective Carter at Luther's house. Twists and betrayals abound, leaving the audience in suspense up until the very end. In a fittingly dark conclusion, a series of violent altercations and intense standoffs result in everybody, other than Cynthia and Luther, dying. The movie ends on a bleak note, with Cynthia taking the cash and leaving a broken Luther behind. Despite losing whatever, Luther's failure is a result of his own greed and lack of ethical compass.

General Review
"Bad City Blues" features a detailed plot involved with the brutal truth of criminal life. The superb character development, specifically of the ethically ambiguous Luther, makes the movie engaging. The film weaves a tight script with powerful efficiencies, creating a dark however compelling narrative about criminal offense, punishment, and redemption in a city marked by corruption. Despite its violent undertones, "Bad City Blues" is a noteworthy exploration of human battle and fallibility.
