Before Midnight (2013)

Before Midnight Poster

It has been nine years since we last met Jesse and Celine, the French-American couple who once met on a train in Vienna. Now, live in Paris with twin daughters, but have spent a summer in Greece on the invitation of an author colleague of Jesse's. When the vacation is over and Jesse must send his teenage son off to the States, he begins to question his life decisions, and his relationship with Celine is at risk.

Introduction
"Before Midnight" is a romantic drama film launched in 2013. Directed by Richard Linklater, it's the third installation in the "Before" series, following "Before Sunrise" (1995) and "Before Sunset" (2004). Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy repeat their roles as Jesse and Celine, portraying two fans who have been separated and reunited throughout twenty years. The duo likewise co-wrote the movie script with Linklater.

Plot
The movie occurs in Greece, 9 years after the events of "Before Sunset". We discover Jesse and Celine, now a couple, at the tail end of a six-week vacation. They have twin daughters, and Jesse's son from his previous relationship, Hank, is visiting them.

The film begins with Jesse bidding Hank goodbye at the airport as he returns to his mother in the U.S. Jesse is concerned about being physically missing from his kid's life, even recommending that he and Celine could think about relocating to Chicago for him. Nevertheless, Celine is reluctant about leaving her job and life in Paris.

Deepening Conflict
As the day progresses, the couple engage with their buddies, have a romantic night alone, and engage in various existential and intimate discussions, a recurring pattern throughout the series. These conversations expose the foundations of their relationship, which is now tinged with longstanding aggravations, simmering bitterness and deeply ingrained worries.

Stress culminate in a huge battle at a hotel where they were expected to have a romantic night. Jesse wishes to relocate to Chicago to be closer to his kid, Hank, but Celine feels that would infringe on her self-reliance and her career.

Resolution
In spite of a mentally charged argument and the tip of a separation, the film ends on a confident note. For all their discord, they both expose an intimate understanding of the other, and their argument basically challenges whether they want to continue putting in the effort to stay together in spite of their disagreements.

Overall Reception
"Before Midnight" was extremely praised for its intelligent movie script and authentic representation of a long-term relationship, marked by passionate love, deep annoyance, shared history, and enduring connection. Like its predecessors, it supplies a strikingly realistic narrative instead of a neatly packaged Hollywood romance. Chosen for an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, it is considered by many to be a fitting follow up to the earlier films, rounding out Linklater's trilogy with maturity and psychological resonance.

Conclusion
"Before Midnight", with its portrayal of the battles of preserving a long-term romantic relationship, offers a stark contrast to the initial romantic whirlwind featured in "Before Sunrise". The strength of the film lies not just in its movie script but also in the detailed details subtly woven into the naturalistic efficiencies of Hawke and Delpy. The outcome is an intimate and poignant expedition of love, time, and the complicated truth of lived romance. Linklater masterfully brings the story cycle with a level of depth and complexity that few romances in movie theater have actually attained.
