In the dark silence of the sea during World War II, the submarine USS Tiger Shark prowls on what should be a routine rescue mission. But for the shell-shocked crew, trapped together in the sub's narrow corridors and constricted spaces, this is about to become a journey into the sensory delusions, mental deceptions and runaway fears that lurk just below the surface of the ocean.

Film Title and Initial Release
"Below" is a hybrid genre film integrating aspects of war and scary and occurs within a submarine environment. Launched in 2002 and directed by David Twohy, it draws viewers into a suspenseful, undersea mental thriller.

Plot Summary
The setting presents us to the crew of the USS Tiger Shark, a United States Navy submarine patrolling the Atlantic Ocean throughout World War II. The crew members are quickly forced to rescue survivors from a torpedoed British healthcare facility ship when they receive their orders. One unique survivor is a British Nurse, Claire Paige, whose addition aboard seems to set off a series of mysterious events.

As the mystical events begin to intensify, the crew understands they are not alone on the submarine, presuming the presence of a supernatural entity. It gradually becomes apparent that beneath the surface area lies a fatal secret tied to their Captain's past. The Captain, initially reported as dead due to purchasing the submarine to go unfathomable and harmful the ship, appears to have a sticking around influence over the vessel and the story indicates that his wrathful spirit might be the cause for the unnerving phenomena.

Twist and Climax
The core of the motion picture comes towards the end, revealing that the former Captain isn't the cruel spirit. It was in fact the crew that had mutinied and killed him after he had threatened their lives. Consumed by guilt, the crew members begin experiencing hallucinations making them realize the evil "Below" isn't paranormal, but their collective guilt for the crime they devoted.

In the height of the climax, USS Tiger Shark is attacked by a German warship. Under attack, numerous team members die sporadically due to enemy fire, the submarine sinking, guilt-ridden deceptions, or switching on each other out of worry and paranoia.

Resolution
Just three team members make it through the ordeal. Claire, the British nurse, together with two American sailors, manage to leave in a lifeboat and are ultimately saved. The staying crew members on the submarine relatively get their penance through different fatal results, which sets the tone for an eerie yet gratifying resolution of the film, allowing for a sense of justice served for the previous captain's unjustified death.

Main Themes
The film effectively mixes elements of scary, suspense, and secret, more magnified by the claustrophobic environment of a submarine. It checks out themes of guilt, repercussion, and paranoia, presenting a metaphorical 'haunting', with the spectral occurrences being reflections of the crew's guilty conscience rather than real ghosts.

Conclusion
All in all, "Below" is a psychological horror film that leverages its distinct submarine setting to construct suspense and layer complex styles. The claustrophobic atmosphere, added with aspects of suspense, regret, and hallucination, makes this movie an intense thriller that leaves the audience tense and pondering over the depths of human guilt and its substantial inner turmoil.
