Plot
Muni plays Johnny Ramirez, a young, ambitious and idealistic legal representative of Mexican descent who loses his first case due to bigotry and chooses to leave Los Angeles for the border town of San Pablo. He begins as a dishwasher in Charlie Roark's (Pallette) casino but soon manipulates his way into being a manager. However, this is coupled with Johnny's taking ownership of the casino.

Main Characters & Conflicts
Beside Charlie, there is his wife Marie, portrayed by Davis, an unhappily wed lady who feeds her solitude with alcohol. An unclear relationship begins in between the powerful Johnny and the disregarded Marie. Marie succumbs to Johnny, however he stays indifferent, stimulating a tempest of jealousy in her.

Johnny meets Dale (Lindsay), an advanced and gorgeous girl going to the border town. Both are romantically drawn in; nevertheless, their relationship is threatened by Marie's jealousy.
