Clerks (1994)

Clerks Poster

Convenience and video store clerks Dante and Randal are sharp-witted, potty-mouthed and bored out of their minds. So in between needling customers, the counter jockeys play hockey on the roof, visit a funeral home and deal with their love lives.

Intro
"Clerks" is a 1994 American funny film composed and directed by Kevin Smith, and stars Brian O'Halloran and Jeff Anderson. The Core story revolves around the lives and experiences of 2 corner store clerks throughout a day in the suburban town of Leonardo, New Jersey.

Plot
Dante Hicks (Brian O'Halloran) is a young man who works at Quick Stop, a little corner store. The film begins with Dante being called into work on his day off. There, he faces different obstacles, from dealing with obnoxious clients to negotiating a complicated love life. The latter involves his present girlfriend Veronica (Marilyn Ghigliotti), who is devotedly encouraging and caring, and his ex-girlfriend Caitlin (Lisa Spoonauer), who he discovers is engaged to be married.

Dante's buddy Randal Graves (Jeff Anderson) works at the nearby video store, RST Video; he is indifferent and frequently disregards his task, routinely closing his store without caution, and coming over to the Quick Stop to talk with Dante, contributing to the latter's problems.

Character Development
Throughout Dante's day, the two clerks come across different wacky customers, quickly revealing the comedic aspect of the film. Nevertheless, below the humor lies a layer of disillusionment; Dante complains that he is stuck in a menial task and constantly insists that he is "not even supposed to be here today!" Randal, on the other hand, is completely content with his task, showing an existential approval of what he does.

Climax and Resolution
Later on in the day, Dante discovers that Caitlin had sex with a dead male in the Quick Stop bathroom, mistaking him for Dante. This event enhances Dante's belief that his life is spiraling out of control and he winds up combating with Randal over their life choices. The argument culminates in Randal acknowledging Dante's reluctance to take control of his life and make his own decisions, which is the root cause of his problems. The motion picture ends with Randal leaving the shop after tossing Dante's sign that states, "I ensure you; we're open".

Important Acclaim and Influence
"Clerks" had a significant impact on independent cinema. The movie's budget was less than $30,000, however it grossed over $3 million at package office, ending up being a cult classic. It successfully illustrated the angst and discontent of the generation X lifestyle and showcased how humor can be discovered in mundane daily jobs. The movie's success paved the way for Smith's subsequent movies and developed his style of dialogue-heavy, pop-culture-laden scripts.

In summary, "Clerks" is a comedic exploration of the lives of two everyday working people, exposing the aggravations of underpaid retail jobs and the existential predicaments of contemporary life. It is a movie that differs common Hollywood stories by finding humor and depth in the normal, with its memorable characters and sharp, pop culture-referencing dialogue.
