An 1840s British surgeon, experiments with anesthetic gases in an effort to make surgery pain-free. While doing so, his demonstration before a panel of his peers ends in a horrific mishap with his patient awakening under the knife; he is forced to leave his position in disgrace. To complicate matters, he becomes addicted to the gases and gets involved with a gang of criminals, led by Black Ben and his henchman Resurrection Joe.

ADVANCEMENT
Throughout the development of the movie, Dr. Bolton's dependency becomes more severe, and he becomes completely addicted to the gas, drawing him deeper into the lethal operation led by Black Ben and Resurrection Joe. On the other hand, his nephew Jonathan (Francis Matthews) and Bolton's housemaid Mrs. Black (Betta St. John), grow progressively concerned about the medical professional's wellness and suspicious associations.

CONCLUSION
The climax of the film comes when Dr. Bolton, determined to test his anesthetic on a client during an actual operation, botches the surgical treatment due to an incorrect dosage. This eventually causes the patient to die, causing the physician's medical license being revoked.

Discovering the nefarious deeds of Black Ben and Resurrection Joe, Dr. Bolton battles them off in a thrilling conflict. He manages to kill Resurrection Joe by administering an overdose of the gases, paradoxically utilizing the exact same instrument that caused his own downfall.

In the end, Dr. Bolton is cleared of any involvement with the murders. He handles to break free from his dependency however is unable to continue practicing medicine. However, Bolton's experiments are not completely in vain, as his nephew Jonathan goes on to best and utilize the anesthetic in surgeries.
