Crave (2013)

Crave Poster

Aiden craves a better life. A life away from his gruesome job as a crime scene photographer, working alongside his detective friend Pete. A meaningful life where he can escape the hard streets of Detroit, fall in love with the perfect woman and save the world from evil. As Aiden's dark imagination starts to leak into reality, he meets Virginia, a younger woman with her own dilemmas and desires.

Introduction to "Crave"
"Crave" is a 2013 psychological thriller directed by Charles de Lauzirika, marking his directorial debut. The movie delves into the troubled psyche of Aiden, the main character played by Josh Lawson, as he faces his inner devils and dreams about taking justice into his own hands. As Aiden's grasp on truth weakens, the audience is taken on a dark and gritty journey through the underbelly of urban decay and human wickedness.

Plot Overview
The movie opens with Aiden, an independent criminal offense scene professional photographer in Detroit, who invests his days documenting the residues of violent criminal offenses. The harrowing scenes he records start to take a toll on his frame of mind, feeding his significantly graphic daydreams of vigilante justice. His narration exposes his deep-seated desires to act against what he perceives as the wrongs of society. Through these narratives, we get an insight into Aiden's complicated character-- a mix of empathy, disgust, and a yearning for control over the entropy surrounding him.

Aiden's growing detachment from truth is further sustained by his interactions with his next-door neighbors, particularly a frustrating gang that harasses the regional neighborhood. His ruminations on violence are likewise affected by his friendship with Pete, a grizzled detective (played by Ron Perlman), who shares bleak perspectives on humankind and police.

Character Dynamics and Romantic Interest
The intro of Virginia, played by Emma Lung, brings a new dynamic to the story. As Aiden's love interest, she offers a twinkle of hope and a distraction from his dark thoughts. Their tumultuous relationship ends up being the bedrock for much of Aiden's psychological journey as he strives to reconcile his affection for her with his increasingly disturbed psyche. Virginia's complex nature and her own set of flaws contribute to the intricacy of their relationship and eventually serves to heighten Aiden's inner turmoil.

Descent into Darkness
As the film progresses, Aiden becomes more taken in by his vigilante dreams, which begin to bleed into his truth. His moral compass blurs as he takes actionable actions towards enacting his own sense of justice. The film effectively showcases his descent as he goes from being a silent observer to a participant in the extremely violence he abhors. This is illuminated by certain crucial scenes that portray Aiden's mental break and subsequent loss of control, leaving the audience to question his dependability as a narrator.

Climactic Turns and Moral Ambiguity
"Crave" constructs to a climax as Aiden's actions escalate and the lines in between ideal and incorrect are significantly distorted. A stunning act of violence represents a turning point in Aiden's journey and forces him to confront the repercussions of his actions. The climax acts as an exploration into the fundamental moral uncertainty of his quest for justice, casting an important eye on the notion of taking the law into one's own hands.

Conclusion and Themes
"Crave" is an extreme, thought-provoking film that looks into the mind of a man struggling with his own peace of mind and sense of morality. It's a gritty, character-driven story that explores the themes of vigilantism, the effect of violence on the mind, and the great line in between ideal and wrong. As the film draws to a close, it leaves the audience with a sobering reflection on the effects of succumbing to one's darkest impulses. Aiden's fate works as a poignant reminder of the destructive capacity that lies within each people, should we lose sight of the boundary between fantasy and reality.
