Plot Summary
The movie bases its plot on a freshly wed couple, Richard (Thomas Jane) and Gina (Lauren German), who embark on a trip for their honeymoon. As they are driving through the Nevada desert at night, they stumble upon a man severely injured in an accident. Instead of leaving him behind, they decide to assist and bring him into their automobile.

However, things turn spooky as the hurt guy begins acting strangely, causing tension in between the couple. His suspicious behavior drives Richard to ultimately killing him. Attempting to eliminate the body, they enter into a mishap, trashing their automobile, and leaving them stranded in the middle of no place. The couple is then tossed into a loop of encountering their dead hitchhiker constantly and inexplicably, with each encounter ending in Richard eliminating him again.

Resolution and Twist
As the stress and fear continue to build, Richard unintentionally stabs Gina during another run-in with the hitchhiker. As she passes away, a stunning revelation strikes him: whatever coming back at him - the mystical hitchhiker personifies him. The man they had actually gotten was Richard himself, and the whole journey was a surreal, horrible cycle of self-destruction.

The twist originates from Richard understanding that he was the victim of the vehicle mishap they found in the beginning. Drunk driving had eliminated his wife, and he was killed by a complete stranger who struck him while he was on the road, dying - the complete stranger being his future self. The loop was his punishment, being sentenced to relive his actions and their destructive consequences permanently.
