Devolved (2010)

Devolved Poster

A group of teenagers find themselves shipwrecked on an uncharted island off the Mexican coast. Faced with the prospect of a long-term stay, the island soon degenerates into a struggle between two groups; teens who want high school to end as fast as possible, and teens who never want high school to end.

Film Overview
Released in 2010, "Devolved" is a darkly comedic independent film directed by John Cregan. The movie takes a satirical dig at the typical high school stereotypes that often identify teen movie theater, by separating the characters on an uninhabited island and observing how their high school politics sustain or lessen in the face of survival. The cast of "Devolved" includes Gary Entin, Lindsey Shaw, Robert Adamson, and Chris Kattan.

Plot Summary
The story begins with a high school class journey on a boat. Tragedy strikes when the boat sinks, leading to the death of the adult chaperone and leaving the survivors stranded on an unoccupied island. The group is classically divided, on one side are the "popular" kids led by a jock, Zack (Adamson), and on the other side are the "alternative" kids led by an ironical outsider, Flynn (Entin).

As they grapple with survival, the island ends up being a perverse microcosm of their high school. The students' high school-style dynamics persist: popularity contests, bullying, romance, rivalries, and parties, leaving reason and practical considering of the formula. Zack attempts to run the island like a dictator, favouring the popular kids and marginalizing those considered unworthy. Meanwhile, Flynn and his group of misfits challenge this hierarchy system.

Style and Style
"Devolved" is a creative blend of teen comedy and survival drama. It use the basic teenage film tropes, like the fight in between jocks and nerds, popular versus undesirable kids, and the melodrama of high school love. Nevertheless, it does so in a rather surreal setting where the stakes are life and death. It's a tweaked take on 'Lord of the Flies' with the more extreme survival components replaced with funny and unreasonable high school habits.

Key Characters
The movie directly focuses on Zack and Flynn with their factions, therefore removing other potential character developments within the large group. Zack, the stereotyped jock, appears to be the villainous character, motivating the social departments among the survivors and carrying out a rule based on high school social status. Flynn, on the other hand, becomes the unwilling hero of the film. He exists as a smart-mouthed, smart figure who becomes a natural leader versus Zack. Peggy, played by Lindsey Shaw, is the love interest, stuck between the competition of Zack and Flynn.

Conclusion
The ending of "Devolved" is suddenly bleak as it supplies a critical commentary on teenage stereotypes and the social politics of high school. However, regardless of the grim outcome, Cregan keeps an element of funny and absurdity throughout the film. Overall, "Devolved" is a parody of both survival dramas and teenager movie clichés, offering a non-traditional viewing experience for the audience. It blends aspects of social satire, black comedy, and caricatures of high school archetypes to create a special, if rather surreal, coming-of-age tale.
