Fire Sale (1977)

Fire Sale Poster

Benny and his wife Ruthie are getting set to drive down to Florida, but Benny needs someone to look after his department store while he's gone. Though he doesn't think much of him, Benny hands the responsibility over to his son, Russell. While Russell doesn't get much respect from his parents, he's better off than his brother, Ezra, whom Benny has gone so far as to disown. Ezra is currently battling with his work (coach of a high school basketball team that hasn't won in ages) and his wife (who keeps nagging him that she wants to have a baby as soon as possible) at the same time.

Overview
"Fire Sale" is a 1977 film directed by Alan Arkin. The comedy movie was a satirical take a look at the complexities of family relationships and entrepreneurial exploits. The plot centers around the Fikus household, owners of a department store, and their battle to put their lives and business back on track. It was a film that showcased extravagance, over-commercialism, and household loyalty in an entertaining and humorous way.

Plot Summary
The Fikus family owns a big department store which they called after their surname-- Fikus. Nevertheless, business has been underperforming. Benny Fikus (Alan Arkin), the middle brother, is pushed into managing the stopping working service as his older brother, Ezra (Vincent Gardenia), recuperates from a psychological breakdown. Benny recommends setting the store on fire to collect the insurance cash and ultimately plans a fire sale, implying a significantly discounted sale of product.

As Benny starts this ambitious strategy, he needs to handle a series of comical mishaps. This incorporates handling his competitive, basketball caring father, Sherman, who obsesses over winning a local championship, his emotionally unsteady bro Ezra, and a host of other eccentric characters. The comic scenes frequently revolve around the disorderly nature of the department store's management, the rivalries in between members of the Fikus household, and the town's reaction to the fire sale.

Performance and Style
The efficiencies of stars like Arkin, Rob Reiner, and Vincent Gardenia stand out in this funny ensemble, and their comic timing and responses to the scenarios around them form the crux of the film's humor. Alan Arkin, likewise marking his directorial launching, guides the cast's comic performances adeptly. The comedy is edgy and ironically extreme, providing an in-depth assessment of human habits, individual characters, and family dynamics in an abnormally humorous style.

Themes
The movie serves as a commentary on the fixation with price-tag joy, materialism, and the harmful nature of familial pressure. There is a clear satirical representation of entrepreneurial desperation in the form of a fire sale. Through the humorous lens, the film criticizes the ruthless pursuit of the American Dream by representing the ethical disintegration it can result in. It also catches the essence of familial relationships, its ups-and-downs, and the undeviating bond that holds a household together in the middle of crises.

Reception
Although it was not commercially effective, "Fire Sale" was applauded for its ingenious storytelling, satire, and humor. The efficiencies of the cast, particularly Arkin, Gardenia, and Reiner, were praised for their comic timing and comprehensive character representations. Critics also appreciated the film's satirical take on capitalistic practices and its dark humor.

Conclusion
In summary, "Fire Sale" is a 1977 comedy movie that expertly combines familial characteristics and entrepreneurial incidents with the ever-present satirical critique of the American Dream. Alan Arkin's performances and direction provide an unique blend of humor and dark comedy that paint an unique picture of the dangers of desperate entrepreneurship and indomitable familial bonds.
