A psychic's ominous reading sends a man into a tailspin.

Overview
"First Snow" is a thriller film launched in 2006. Directed by Mark Fergus and produced by Tom Lassally, Bob Yari, and others, the film includes Guy Pearce, Adam Scott, and J.K. Simmons in prominent functions. The story focuses on the themes of fate, destiny, and dealing with one's death. Pearce plays a lovely character called James 'Jimmy' Starks, who must come to grips with the discoveries about his impending death.

Plot
The story starts with Jimmy Starks, a suave and fast-talking salesperson living in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After his car breaks down in a village, to kill time, he visits a foreteller named Vacaro, played by J.K. Simmons. Initially, Starks chuckles off Vacaro's readings. Nevertheless, as the psychic gets distressed and inexplicably refunds his cash after an unknown image from the reading, Starks is left distressed and unclear.

As the readings begin coming to life one by one, Starks becomes significantly paranoid about the forecast related to his death, which obviously is expected to happen after the 'first snow.' As winter season techniques, his life begins spiralling out of control. The unpredictability of his lifestyle takes a toll on his relationship with his sweetheart Deirdre, depicted by Piper Perabo.

Conflict
Further complicating matters, a past business partner who went to prison due to Jimmy's dodgy transactions is released. This integrated with the psychic prediction leaves him even more afraid. In his desperation, he starts behaving erratically, alienating his friends and Deirdre. At the same time, he starts to take precautionary steps to try and circumvent his fate. His fascination with death draws out a dark side, making him suspicious of whatever and everyone.

Resolution
Throughout the 'First Snow,' Jimmy is haunted by his own death. However, the surprising twist lies in the reality that his doom is not as he expects - from an external force or from the grudge-holding previous business partner. Instead, his failure is brought upon by his afraid actions and paranoia induced by the prophecy. In the end, he catches a deadly accident on ice, paradoxically brought on by a protective barrier he constructed himself to safeguard from potential hazards.

Themes
"First Snow" digs deep into the human psyche, showcasing guy's struggle with the inevitability of his death, fear, guilt, and paranoia when challenged with the prospect of impending death. It thoughtfully explores whether our life is determined by fate or self-fulfilling prophecies, and how our actions or worries may lead us to our fate. The vital interpretation of the storyline is about man becoming a victim of his fixation with fate.

Conclusion
Overall, "First Snow" provides an extreme, thrilling journey with psychological twists and turns. Guy Pearce's sensational performance, combined with an appealing and suspenseful story, keeps the audience hooked. This film effectively mixes noir aspects with a stark existential crisis, offering audiences with an intriguing philosophical contemplation on fate, destiny, and how we form our future.
