Plot Summary
Colin Firth plays Stanley, a popular and cynical magician who carries out under the guise of a Chinese guy called Wei Ling Soo. A long-lasting sceptic, Stanley firmly disbelieves anything that includes magic, mystics, and prophecies. His long-time friend and fellow magician, Howard (Simon McBurney), invites him to the South of France to unmask a young American spirit medium, Sophie (Emma Stone), thought to be exploiting an abundant household, the Catledges.

Stanley certainly takes on the difficulty and travels to France with an objective to unveil Sophie as a scams. Nevertheless, as he observes Sophie easily and precisely direct the departed pasts of different characters, he finds himself questioning his drastic shock in the supernatural. Stanley, surprise at himself, is gradually being enchanted by Sophie's aura, despite his repetitive trials to expose her as a fake.

Subplots & Developments
All at once, a romantic subplot is developing. Sophie is being pursued by Brice (Hamish Linklater), the beneficiary to the Catledge fortune, who is really in love with her. Sophie, on the other hand, is taken with Stanley's authenticity and brittleness, causing a growing attachment in between the two main characters. As Stanley's rigid perspective on life start to fail, his auntie Vanessa (Eileen Atkins) provides him with smart counsel on matters of the heart, further complicating his sensations for Sophie.

Stanley's scepticism is destroyed when Sophie performs a séance in a rainy night and remembers explicit and individual information from Stanley's youth. Convinced that Sophie is real, he experiences an epiphany about the wonderful and inexplicable aspects of life. But as Stanley will propose to Sophie, it's exposed her supernatural capabilities were a fraud, plotted by Howard and Sophie to fool Stanley.

Resolution & Conclusion
In the last act, Stanley and Sophie part methods, with Sophie getting engaged to Brice. However, Stanley ultimately understands that although Sophie's psychic abilities were a scams, his feelings for her were real. Subsequently, he rushes to stop Sophie's wedding event. Sophie, in turn, admits she had also fallen in love with Stanley regardless of belonging to a scam planned to deceive him.

The film concludes with Stanley and Sophie sharing a passionate kiss under the moonlight, repeating the theme of love and illusion that "Magic in the Moonlight" has illuminated throughout its plot.
