Intent on assisting her to afford speculative treatment, Whitlock stages the theft of $485,000 in drug money from the police station's proof space.

Major Twists
The greatest twist in the plot arrives when a double homicide is reported, and the victims are none besides Chris and Ann Merai. Everything points towards a planned murder, and the primary suspect becomes Whitlock offered his psychological connection with the victims. More difficulties occur for Whitlock when the Drug Enforcement Administration begins inquiring about the missing funds, which, unbeknownst to them, Whitlock stole to help Ann Merai.

Suspicions Arise
As Whitlock investigates the murder, he discovers that Ann Merai and her hubby had gotten a massive life insurance policy. Whitlock's predicament worsens, as he learns that Ann Merai named him the policy's sole beneficiary. The genuine kicker? The cash for the policy originated from Whitlock himself - the funds he intended for her medication. All of this makes Whitlock a prime suspect in the murder case.

The Final Confrontation

It's exposed that Ann Merai and her hubby were alive and planned the whole scheme to get away with the insurance coverage cash. Ann Merai, who was supposedly a victim herself, turns out to be one of the antagonists. Chris is eliminated in the confrontation, while Whitlock manages to catch Ann Merai. Whitlock prospers in showing his innocence to the DEA, and his ex-wife and fellow investigator, Alex (Eva Mendes), who had been investigating the murder case and wound up assisting him in fixing it.
