Curmudgeonly old Frank lives by himself. His routine involves daily visits to his local library, where he has a twinkle in his eye for the librarian. His grown children are concerned about their father’s well-being and buy him a caretaker robot. Initially resistant to the idea, Frank soon appreciates the benefits of robotic support – like nutritious meals and a clean house – and eventually begins to treat his robot like a true companion. With his robot’s assistance, Frank’s passion for his old, unlawful profession is reignited, for better or worse.

Movie Synopsis
"Robot & Frank", directed by Jake Schreier, is a 2012 sci-fi comedy-drama that provides a heartfelt yet thought-provoking glimpse into our possibly technologically-infused future. Embed in the not-so-distant future, the film centers on Frank, a former career robber showing early signs of dementia, and a robot that his kid Hunter purchases to support him.

Main Characters and Plot
Frank Weld, played by Frank Langella, is an elderly ex-jewel burglar living alone in Cold Spring, New York, who is experiencing getting worse memory lapses and worry of dementia. His kid, Hunter (James Marsden), due to the exhaustion of frequent journeys, provides him with a caretaker robotic (voiced by Peter Sarsgaard), much to Frank's preliminary dislike, as the senior man finds it unnecessary and invasive.

The robot's function is to enhance Frank's mental and physical health by presenting structure to his everyday routine, directing him through cognitive and exercises, and making balanced meals. While Frank is initially resistant to the Robot, the course of their relationship modifications when he recognizes the Robot is not set versus thievery; thus he decides to go back to his old practices and skills of burglary.

Vault Heist and Unfolding Drama
They target Jake (Jeremy Strong), the local library's arrogant young new expert, who prepares to replace all the books with digital versions. Jake owns an elegant piece of antique jewelry that Frank plans to take by controling the robot's shows, which doesn't acknowledge the illegality of theft. Susan Sarandon plays Jennifer, the town's librarian who has compassion with Frank's classic love for printed books and is exposed to have a much deeper connection with Frank.

As the plot unfolds, Frank and the Robot handle to conquer the break-in, however Hunter, alarmed by the renewed criminal activity, attempts to get rid of the Robot. Simultaneously, the authorities become suspicious, increasing the heat around Frank.

Emotional Climax and Conclusion
As the story reaches a climax, Frank understands deleting the Robot's data to safeguard his theft secret would erase its memory, basically resetting it. He's confronted with a tough option due to his attachment to the Robot, which he now deems a pal instead of a device. Frank's battle against the Robot's memory deletion lays the groundwork for an emotional finale.

When Jennifer, exposed to be Frank's long-forgotten better half due to his dementia, helps him recognize that his actions are threatening her and the Robot, he finally decides to erase the Robot's memory, effectively losing his only friend.
