The story forwards Anakin Skywalker's improvement into Darth Vader, the complexity of his relationship with Padmé Amidala, the discovery of the clone army, and the teetering edge of a full-blown stellar war.

Plot Summary
Set a decade after the events of "The Phantom Menace", "Attack of the Clones" starts with an assassination attempt on Padmé Amidala, previous Queen and now a Senator from Naboo. This prompts Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi and his apprentice Anakin Skywalker to secure her. During their vigil, Anakin starts revealing deeper feelings for Padmé, causing romantic stress. All at once, another attempt on Padmé's life leads Obi-Wan on a different journey to reveal the source, traces of which lead him to a distant world called Kamino, where an army of clones is being secretly produced.

Anakin's Path and Romance
Upon the order of the Jedi Council, Anakin accompanies Padmé back to her home world, Naboo, amidst the assassination dangers. Their shared time results in a budding love, in spite of it being an express violation of the Jedi Code. Anakin also experiences headaches about his mother suffering and travels to Tatooine to save her, only to arrive too late; his mom's death triggers his preliminary descent into the dark side, sustained by rage and loss.

Obi-Wan's Discovery
On The Other Hand, Obi-Wan Kenobi stays on the path of the assassination plot. His journey takes him to planet Kamino, where he finds the production of a secret Clone Army, seemingly commissioned by a deceased Jedi without the Council's knowledge. He further discovers a link between the ominous clones and a feared fugitive hunter, Jango Fett. After an extreme battle with Jango, Kenobi traces him to Geonosis; there he learns about a conspiracy plotted by a separatist movement led by a rogue Jedi, Count Dooku.

Climax and Aftermath
When Anakin and Padmé discover of Kenobi's danger on Geonosis, they rush to his aid but are caught. In the ensuing battle, the Jedi knights, helped by the recently discovered Clone Army, clash with Count Dooku's droid forces. This iconic fight signals the start of the much-feared 'Clone Wars.' The film concludes with Anakin and Padmé covertly weding, regardless of Anakin's Jedi vows, setting the stage for an extension of their secretive and turbulent romance in "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith".
