"The Colony" is a 1995 thriller film directed by Rob Hedden and very loosely motivated by the true story of John List. The film includes an effective however ruthless business person and a married man, Rick Knowlton, portrayed by John Ritter, who is the heart of the movie. The plot revolves around the character's desire to escape the pressures of contemporary life and find a picturesque living within a secluded neighborhood, only to find that the seeming paradise conceals dark and dangerous tricks.

Main Plot Synopsis
Rick Knowlton is a man living under enormous tension brought on by his competitive task and the quick rate of city life. When he is used a chance to transfer to a private neighborhood called "The Colony", it looks like a dream come to life. This gated society guarantees a go back to a simpler lifestyle, free from the crime, contamination, and overwhelming tension of city life. Brought in by the concept, Rick, together with his other half and kid, decides to provide it a shot, hoping to find a serene haven.

Upon their arrival, they are impressed by the evident perfection of the community: the friendly next-door neighbors, the stunning homes, and the picturesque setting, a plain contrast to their previous environment. Nevertheless, this paradise is not what it appears. The Knowltons soon find that the colony is kept up an iron fist by a strict house owners' association led by the enigmatic and rigorous gatekeeper, played by Hal Linden.

As they settle into their new life, the family begins observing odd habits and rigorous guidelines enforced by the community. Rick grows significantly anxious as he witnesses the homeowners' conformity and the severe punishment of those who break the rules. Rick's pain develops into a desperate battle for survival when they find out the sinister fact behind The Colony.
