Hired by a powerful member of the Russian mafia to avenge an FBI sting that left his brother dead, a psychopathic hitman known only as The Jackal proves an elusive target for the people charged with the task of bringing him down: a deputy FBI director, a Russian MVK Major, and a jailed IRA terrorist who can recognize him.

Introduction
"The Jackal" is a 1997 action thriller directed by Michael Caton-Jones. The movie stars Bruce Willis as the confidential and cold-blooded assassin known just as 'The Jackal', alongside Richard Gere who plays Declan Mulqueen, a previous IRA sniper. Sydney Poitier, Jack Black, Tess Harper, and Diane Venora also have substantial functions. The film is a loose remake of the 1973 movie "The Day of the Jackal".

Plot
The story begins with the harsh murder of a Russian mob manager's sibling, leading the mob manager to employ The Jackal for a revenge assassination. The Jackal's target is the director of the FBI. Upon learning of the approaching assassination, the FBI, under the deputy director Carter Preston (played by Sydney Poitier), is required to track down Declan Mulqueen to assist them find The Jackal. Mulqueen is presently locked up, however he has historic understanding of The Jackal.

Developments
Mulqueen hesitantly accepts assist the FBI in their mission to discover The Jackal. Together with a Russian officer, Major Koslova (played by Diane Venora), Mulqueen gets soaked up into the cat-and-mouse chase versus The Jackal. Mulqueen handles to sidetrack The Jackal long enough for Koslova to intervene, though she gets fatally shot. This intervention, however, allows Mulqueen to eliminate The Jackal, thus avenging Koslova's death and preventing the assassination.

The film concludes with the authorities covering the real happenings of the stopped working assassination effort to prevent a scandal and public panic. For his support, Mulqueen is promised that charges against him will be dropped and that he will be released.

Overall Impressions
"The Jackal" is a gripping thriller, using the cat-and-mouse formula with a high concentrate on the adaptability of the protagonist. Bruce Willis' performance as the emotionless, calculative Jackal is convincingly chilling and contrasts well against the more fiery and enthusiastic Mulqueen, represented by Richard Gere.
