It has been twenty years since Don Diego de la Vega fought Spanish oppression in Alta California as the legendary romantic hero, Zorro. Having escaped from prison he transforms troubled bandit Alejandro into his successor, in order to foil the plans of the tyrannical Don Rafael Montero who robbed him of his freedom, his wife and his precious daughter.

Plot Summary

Around this time, Zorro's real identity is found, causing Montero eliminating his partner and kidnapping his infant daughter, Elena. Don Diego is locked up for twenty years.

Twenty years later, a burglar and outlaw named Alejandro Murrieta (Antonio Banderas) and his sibling Joaquín rob a military wagon but are caught. Alejandro gets away, however Joaquín is killed. Alejandro is discovered by an old, released Don Diego, who takes him under his wing.

While battling Montero's henchmen and saving the working servants, Alejandro, together with Diego, manages to interrupt Montero's plan. Elena battle Montero, who ultimately attempts to eliminate Zorro however ends up being eliminated by Don Diego. The film concludes with Alejandro presuming the Zorro mantle completely and weding Elena, ready to continue Zorro's legacy to safeguard the common people.
