Surly, a curmudgeon, independent squirrel is banished from his park and forced to survive in the city. Lucky for him, he stumbles on the one thing that may be able to save his life, and the rest of park community, as they gear up for winter - Maury's Nut Store.

Introduction
"The Nut Job" is a 2014 animated comedy-adventure movie directed by Peter Lepeniotis and co-scripted by Lorne Cameron and Lepeniotis. It features voiceovers from stars such as Will Arnett, Brendan Fraser, Gabriel Iglesias, Jeff Dunham, and Liam Neeson. The movie is inspired by Lepeniotis' short animated movie "Surly Squirrel". The story deciphers the adventures and misadventures of a self-centered squirrel, Surly, and his rat buddy, Buddy, as they prepare a nut store break-in that spirals into a series of comedic occurrences.

Plot
The narrative revolves around the lead character, Surly, voiced by Will Arnett. He is a city purple squirrel who lives in a park in the imaginary town Oakton City. He is done not like by the other animals for his selfishness. When Surly unintentionally ruins the neighborhood's winter food supply, he is gotten rid of and required to make it through in the city.

In the city, Surly finds a nut shop and sees it as a chance to redeem himself by renewing the food supply. He coordinate with Buddy, a mute rat, to outline a break-in on the nut store but their plan is warded off by Raccoon (voiced by Liam Neeson), the park's dictatorial leader. Raccoon has also prepared to rob the store with his group, led by a squirrel named Andie (voiced by Katherine Heigl) and a muscular squirrel named Grayson (voiced by Brendan Fraser).

The parallel planning of both groups for the very same heist results in numerous humorous accidents while also involving the human owner of the nut shop who plans to rob a bank.

Resolution
The film reaches a climax when Surly exposes Raccoon's greedy intentions to the park's animal neighborhood. Raccoon attempts to eliminate Surly, which leads to an extreme chase around the city. The chase ends with Raccoon's defeat and Surly hailed as a hero.

Surly discovers important lessons about team effort and the value of neighborhood. The film ends with the animals delighting in the bounty of nuts robbed from the shop, secure for the winter season, and Surly opting to remain in the park with others rather than going back to the city.

Animation and Style
The animation in "The Nut Job" was well-received, applauded for its attention to detail and the character design range. The film brought to life the bright and wacky cityscape along with the vibrant park neighborhood in a visually appealing manner.

Reception and Legacy
"The Nut Job" found success at package office and with audiences, particularly a younger crowd who enjoyed the slapstick humor and high-energy action. The movie, however, had blended critiques. Some said that the story was foreseeable, while others appreciated the unique undertones of the film that played with crime category conventions.

However, "The Nut Job" showed to be a significant hit for ToonBox Entertainment, launching a sequel titled "The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature" in 2017. In spite of its blended evaluations, "The Nut Job" solidified its position in pop culture as a notable entrant in the canon of 2010s animation.
