Plot Summary
The story revolves around Jerry Black, a Nevada cops investigator near retirement famously played by Jack Nicholson. Throughout his retirement party, Black becomes aware of an 8-year-old girl's gruesome murder and chooses to handle one last case. In spite of the capture of a suspect who confesses under pressure and eventually kills himself, Black doesn't think he was the murderer. He vows on his soul to the victim's mother that he will find the killer.

Investigation and Obsession
Black's fascination with the case leads him to find two other unsolved murders of girls that bear striking resemblances to the existing case. In order to get closer to the mystery, he purchases a gas station in the location where the killings took place. He becomes near a woman named Lori (Robin Wright Penn), a waitress with a daughter named Chrissy who fits the victim profile.

The Anticipation and Climax
As he digs much deeper, he forms a comprehensive theory about the killer and lays a trap to catch him. He utilizes Chrissy as bait, triggering tension and a breakdown in his relationship with Lori.
