Abel Grey is sent to investigate the death of a boy from an exclusive local school, who is found floating in the river. Fearing scandal, the school insists it was suicide. But after discovering from the boy's girlfriend, Carlin, that he was being badly bullied, Abel suspects that a dangerous schoolboy initiation has gone horribly wrong and he secretly solicits the help of a sympathetic teacher, Betsy. He is warned off the investigation by his boss, as the school is a generous benefactor to the Police benevolent fund. Abel, however, cannot let the case go, not only because his own brother committed suicide years before, but also it seems that the spirit of the dead boy is leaving them clues as to what really happened that night.

Plot Overview
In a New England town, the body of a young man named August, a student at Haddan Preparatory School, is discovered submerged in the frozen river at the edge of the school. Convinced that August is a victim of murder and not suicide, Abel Grey (Edward Burns), a stoic state police officer, is designated to the case. Together with his partner Joey, they attempt to retrace the young man's final days.

Meanwhile, Betsy Chase (Jennifer Ehle), a teacher at the school and the dead trainee's former English teacher, also takes an individual interest in the case. As Abel examines the criminal activity, he ends up being mindful of Carlin Leander (Rachelle Lefevre), a young woman who indicates that she may have information about August's death. It emerges that August was the victim of bullying at the hands of the school's rowing team, led by the child of a popular local attorney called Harry McKenna (John Kapelos).

As Abel dives deeper into the case, he discovers himself under increasing pressure from the town's elite, who believe that his examination is opening up a Pandora's box of old tricks. Despite this, Abel, driven by his own past devils and the terrible loss of his own sibling, is determined to discover the reality about the boy's death.

While diving into August's personal life, Abel and Betsy at first concentrate on the deceased's relationship with Carlin, who turns out to be having an affair with Harry McKenna. The investigation is complicated even more when it's revealed that August had a hidden relationship with the school's rowing coach, called Art, who is likewise concealing lots of other secrets of his own.
