About the Film
"The Temptress" is a 1926 American silent romantic drama film directed by Fred Niblo, starring Greta Garbo and Antonio Moreno. It's one of the early movies of Garbo's brief but remarkable Hollywood career. The movie is based upon Vicente Blasco Ibáñez's 1908 novel "The Woman Triumphant" and adjusted for the screen by Dorothy Farnum and Edward Sheldon.

Beginning
The film mainly focuses on the lead character Elena (Greta Garbo), a dazzling and attractive Spanish female whose appeal constantly captivates males, leading them to their failure-- thus the title "The Temptress". The film opens at an extravagant ball in Paris where a French engineer called Manuel Robledo (Antonio Moreno) is smitten by her stunning beauty upon their very first encounter.

Main Characters
Elena is represented by Garbo as a struggling lady who is aware of her charms and their results on guys but is largely controlled by other characters, specifically her former lover, the rich Fontenoy (Armand Kaliz). Manuel, on the other hand, played by Moreno, is portrayed as a reasonable yet passionate individual who, in spite of dealing with terrible repercussions due to Elena's attraction, continues to look after her.

Plot
Manuel is taken part in a train building and construction job in Argentina when Fontenoy, Elena's ex-lover, brings her to Argentina, where Manuel is working. Elena's arrival strongly stimulates the environments. Manuel's good friend, Tito (Marc McDermott), catches Elena's appeals and eliminates himself after stopping working to win her love. Apart from this, the escalation of stress among the regional employees, mostly over Elena, more intensifies the situation.

Though charmed by Elena, Manuel becomes aware of her destructive results and leaves her to concentrate on his work. However, when a dam keeping back a flood toward the workers' settlement breaks due to vengeful act by an estranged employee, Manuel blames Elena for all the events and chooses to stay away from her.

Resolution and Ending
Nevertheless, the film gives a caring insight into Elena's character in the concluding scenes. She is shown as a victim of scenario and societal expectations rather than an intentionally malicious person. In the climax, Elena selflessly helps Manuel raise funds to rebuild the damaged dam and the unfortunate railway job, exposing her authentic love for him.

Reception
"The Temptress" was lauded for its well-crafted story, outstanding performances, and specifically for Garbo's charming screen existence. Many consider it a film showcasing Greta Garbo's capability to genuinely embody her character and make it memorable. Although her character was deemed devastating, her efficiency resulted in a sense of empathy and understanding towards her character, therefore making the audience see the 'temptress' as a human being caught by her situations.

In conclusion, "The Temptress" is more than a romantic silent film; it delves into the depth of human nature, love, sacrifice, and the societal hypocrisies that often result in unintentional consequences. Garbo's captivating efficiency and the significant story make this movie a trademark of the quiet movie age.
