The young D'Artagnan arrives in Paris with dreams of becoming a king's musketeer. He meets and quarrels with three men, Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, each of whom challenges him to a duel. D'Artagnan finds out they are musketeers and is invited to join them in their efforts to oppose Cardinal Richelieu, who wishes to increase his already considerable power over the king. Conflict and Resolution
Cardinal Richelieu is computing to promote a scandal to induce a war between France and England. The Queen's secret affair with the English Duke of Buckingham is the foundation of this scheme. The Queen had gifted the Duke her diamond studs that the King had offered her. Richelieu means to expose the missing studs at an upcoming ball to embarrass the Queen and provoke worldwide stress.

D'Artagnan, with the other Musketeers, starts a risky journey to England to retrieve the diamonds. Despite a number of barriers - including assassination efforts by the shrewd Milady de Winter - they manage to return the gems in time for the ball, therefore restoring the Queen's honor and avoiding a prospective diplomatic crisis.
