Introduction
"Thor: The Dark World" is a 2013 American action-adventure film based on the Marvel Comic character Thor. Directed by Alan Taylor, it's the 2nd film in the Thor series and the eighth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). In this installment, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) battles a primeval race led by Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) who wishes to reverse truth and plunge deep space into darkness.

Story Synopsis
The film opens with Odin (Anthony Hopkins) telling a story about the race of Dark Elves led by Malekith, who attempted to damage deep space using a weapon called Aether during the Convergence, a rare alignment of nine worlds. The Asgardians took the Aether and hid it away. In the present day, Thor and his warrior friends pacify the Nine Realms, which are in chaos following the damage of the Bifrost (the rainbow bridge that connects Asgard to the other worlds).

Meanwhile, on Earth, researcher Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) examines an abnormality comparable to the one that brought Thor to Earth. She inadvertently soaks up the Aether and becomes its host, forcing Thor to bring her to Asgard before Malekith recovers the Aether from her.

Conflict
Malekith and his troops get into Asgard and plunge it into a war. Thor's mom Frigga (Rene Russo) is eliminated safeguarding Jane, further deepening Thor's urge to bring justice. Disobeying Odin, Thor sets out with Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and Jane to Svartalfheim, home of the dark elves, to tempt and defeat Malekith.

Conclusion
However, the strategy backfires when Malekith soaks up the Aether from Jane, eliminating Loki while doing so. Malekith makes his method to Earth to let loose the Aether during the Convergence. Thor and Jane go back to Earth to avenge Loki and stop Malekith. In the middle of a complicated battle throughout the linked worlds, Thor mortally injuries Malekith, eliminating the Dark Elf and his army and dissipating the Aether.

In a twist, it's exposed that Loki is alive, having faked his death once again. He returns to Asgard, impersonating Odin and taking the throne unbeknownst to others. Thor returns to Earth to be with Jane while the real Odin's location stay unknown.

End Credits Scene
In a mid-credits scene, Volstagg (Ray Stevenson) and Sif (Jaimie Alexander) turn over the Aether to the Collector (Benicio Del Toro), believing that it's not smart to keep two Infinity Stones close together (the Tesseract is in Asgard). This is one of the initial explicit links to the bigger MCU storyline of Infinity Stones, leading towards the occasions of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Conclusion
In "Thor: The Dark World", Thor progresses from a bold warrior to a more mature character, making difficult choices for the greater good. The dark tone of the movie, the complex storylines, and the deepening of familial relationships, significantly that of Thor and Loki, have actually been admired by audiences. The most substantial impact of the movie on the MCU, however, is the introduction of the second Infinity Stone, taking Marvel's cinematic universe one action more detailed to the enthusiastic Infinity War arc.
