Their paths cross once again when Donnchadh sets up a competition where the winner gets Isolde's hand in marriage. Tristan represents Lord Marke and, uninformed of the true nature of the prize, wins the tournament. He is left sad when realising that he has won his cherished for another man-- his foster dad, Lord Marke.

The Conflict and Resolution
The heartache doesn't prevent Tristan and Isolde from providing into their passion for each other, stimulating a private affair that, when found, undoes the relative peace that was constructing in between England and Ireland. Feeling betrayed, Lord Marke's trust in Tristan shatters and he eradicates him. The revelation causes a full-blown war in between the 2 nations.

In the end, throughout the horrible fight, Tristan unfortunately passes away in Isolde's arms, proclaiming his love. Isolde, stricken by sorrow, passes away soon after Tristan, leaving a tale of a love so effective yet forbidden, permanently engraved in the record of history.
