Turn It Up Poster

Trying to bootstrap his way out of Brooklyn's mean streets is Diamond, a rap musician. With his long-time pal Gage acting as his manager, he's trying to lay down a demo tape with cut-rate studio time. To pay the bills, he and Gage run drugs for "Mr. B." Inside a week, Diamond's beloved mother dies suddenly, his father appears after an absence of 12 years and wants a relationship, and his girlfriend Kia tells him she's pregnant, asking him if he's ready to be a father. Gage steals $100,000 in a multiple-felony robbery so that Diamond can record a full album, not knowing it's Mr. B's money he's taken. B wants his money, Diamond wants his music, Tia wants an answer.

Intro
"Turn It Up" is a 2000 American criminal offense thriller film directed by Robert Adetuyi and starring Pras Michel, Ja Guideline, and Jason Statham. It tells the story of two boys captured up on the planet of crime trying to succeed in the music market.

Plot Summary
Pras Michel plays Diamond, an aspiring hip-hop artist, and Ja Rule represents his youth friend Gage, a small-time wrongdoer. Diamond dreams of success in the music industry and works to assemble a demonstration tape with the hopes of ultimately securing a record contract. Gage is deeply associated with the criminal underworld and offers financial support for their music project from the profits of his prohibited activities.

After the 2 have a falling out over the sources of their funding, Diamond connects to the regional music manufacturer, Mr.B (played by Jason Statham), who reveals interest in his music. Nevertheless, Diamond discovers that even the legal path to success is not without its criminal complications. Mr. B declines to advance Diamond any money to drop his demonstration, instead demanding that Diamond pays him $100,000 to produce his work.

Turning Points & Resolution
In his desperation, Diamond reengages with Gage, and they reverse to the rough street life to raise funds for Diamond's recording. Their illegal adventures include drug dealing and break-in, dragging them deeper into the violent underbelly of the city.

Nevertheless, their dangerous pursuit for quick cash leads to awful effects when Gage is fatally shot during a messed up robbery attempt. Ravaged by his buddy's death, Diamond grapples with guilt and regrets his options.

In the end, Diamond decides to desert his quest for a recording contract, recognizing the rate he's paid is too high. The movie closes with Diamond launching his music totally free on the streets, emphasizing the value of art and imagination over fame and fortune.

Conclusion
Throughout "Turn It Up", the characters straddle the worlds of music and criminal offense, blurring the lines in between art and the harsh realities of street life. In spite of its bleak portrayal, the movie underscores the power of music and goal in developing an escape from hardship and violence.

Further, it draws attention to the battle faced by young black males in impoverished communities, caught between the take-it-or-leave-it deals of exploitative music manufacturers and the harsh, opportunity-scarce world they originate from.

While "Turn It Up" may not have actually made a huge splash in the box office, it functions as a sobering story of aspiration, good friends, and the cost one wants to spend for success.
